Critical AI literacies Collective

Critical AI Literacies Collective

The Critical AI Literacies Collective (CALC) aims to teach and learn about the wide-ranging global impacts of generative AI from critical, interdisciplinary perspectives.

We approach this topic from a shared commitment to building life-affirming futures for all of us together on this planet.

We will work to increase critical AI literacies at Western Washington University by:

  1. Studying the impacts of generative AI on teaching, learning, research, and public mission at Western from independent and interdisciplinary frameworks
  2. Creating forums for conversations about the present impacts and future possibilities of generative AI on our students, communities, and resources
  3. Building a foundation for public engagement with topics related to generative AI in education from critical perspectives

Our steering committee is composed of Aspen Clark (ITS), Robyn Dahl (Geology & SMATE), Jenny Forsythe (English), Claudia Johnson (Fairhaven College), Amites Sarkar (Mathematics), Emily Spracklin (Western Libraries), and Xi Wang (Energy Studies & Environmental Studies). We are supported by the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, Fairhaven College, and Western Libraries.

All members of our campus community are invited to join quarterly teach-ins (at least one per quarter) and open meetings (at least one per quarter) to teach and learn about AI using critical thinking and multidisciplinary approaches.
